Frank Jacobs Sr. Obituary

Frank Jacobs

1933 - 2022

Frank Jacobs Sr., 89, of Nesquehoning, entered into eternal rest on May 02, 2022 in St. Luke’s Hospital, Miners Campus. He was the husband of Mary Alice “Skip” (McHugh) Jacobs for 64 years, until her passing in 2019.

A lifelong resident of Nesquehoning, who was raised in the Hauto section of the Borough, Frank was a son of the late Frank and Mary (Holick) Jacobs. He was a 1951 graduate of Nesquehoning High School, after which he served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Ross, a destroyer ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

Frank will be best remembered as a man who believed family comes first and the importance of public service for the betterment in which one resides.

Surviving are daughters Nancy Trice (Kevin) of Jim Thorpe and Sharon Meck of Lehighton; sons Robert Jacobs (David) of Towamensing Twp., Edward Jacobs of Nesquehoning, and Eugene Jacobs (Dawn) of Nesquehoning; daughter-in-law Cindy Jacobs of Nesquehoning; sister Frances Hager of Lansford; sister-in-law Mildred Jacobs of Hazleton; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a son Frank Jacobs Jr., a grandson Kevin Trice, a brother Bernard Jacobs, daughter-in-law Denise Jacobs, and a son-in-law Brian Meck.

Frank served the Borough of Nesquehoning for more than 40 years, initially as mayor, 1978-1985, and then as a councilman for many terms, during which he served as council president and chairman of other committees, including Budget, Police, Sanitation, and Street. He was most recently voted into public office as a councilman at age 86. It is fair to say that Frank had vast institutional knowledge of the Borough of Nesquehoning and was passionate about ensuring that tax dollars were spent appropriately.

A lifelong, proud Democrat, Frank served as chairman of the Carbon County Democratic Executive Committee for 12 years, of which he was a member for more than 30 years. Frank was a member of the Carbon County Planning Commission, formerly served on the Carbon County Board of Assessment Appeals and was Nesquehoning’s representative to the Carbon County Solid Waste Advisory Board. Frank also filled an unexpired term as a Carbon County Jury Commissioner, having been appointed by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic of the Carbon County Court of Common Pleas.

For many years, Frank was active in the Nesquehoning Knee-Hi football, wrestling, and girls’ flag football programs. He was a director of the Knee-Hi program in town for many years, and then served as president of the league for many more. He was a member of the Nesquehoning Lions Club, and since its inception, an active member of the Nesquehoning Historical Society.

Frank retired in 1995 from Chemical Leaman Tank Lines, Inc., Nazareth, where he worked for 30 years as a driver. He was proud member of Teamsters Local 773, Allentown, for whom he served as a union steward.
