John J. Barna
1932 - 2024
John J. (Hermie) Barna, 91, formerly of Freeland and Nesquehoning entered into eternal rest on February 5, 2024, at Heritage Hill Senior Living, Weatherly, PA
He was born in Freeland on March 19,1932, to the late John and Helen (Brezina) Barna. He was a graduate of Freeland High School, Class of 1950 and served with the U.S. Army in Germany. After his discharge from the Army, John attended Kings College and worked briefly at Split Rock Resort. He then served as a police officer in Freeland and as Chief of Police for a few years. He retired as a Pennsylvania Liquor Control Officer.
John was a well-known basketball player on the Freeland High School 1945-50 team and played during his time in the Army and at Kings College.
He was also known as a notable golfer and was a previous member at the Berwick Golf Club, Reading Country Club, and the Mahoning Country Club. He also volunteered at Mountain Valley Golf Course.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife Jean Urenovich, daughter Lisa, brothers George and Thomas, and sisters Margaret Dolinsky, Helen Novotnak, and Mary Sims.
He is survived by his son Gary (Crystal) of Camp Hill, PA, daughter Karen (George) Lill of Schnecksville, PA, brothers Joseph and Edward (Marie) both of Freeland, PA, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, February 15, 2024 in Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, 898 Centre St., Freeland, PA 18224. Military interment will be held in St. John Roman Catholic Cemetery, Freeland. Family will receive friends 11-12:00 P.M. in the church. Donations will be accepted in his name to Heritage Hills Senior Living, 800 6th St., Weatherly, PA 18255 or Family Pillar Hospice, 3910 Adler Place, Bethlehem, PA 18017.
