Robert L. Shubeck
1937 - 2026
Robert Lewis “Babser” Shubeck, 89, of Nesquehoning entered into eternal rest Tuesday, May 12, 2026 in St. Luke’s Hospital, Miners Campus surrounded by his family.
He was the husband of the late Gloria Marie (Cerchiaro) Shubeck who passed away April 27, 2021.
Born in Hazleton on January 29, 1937, he was a son of the late Mary N. Shubeck.
He was a lifelong member of the former Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Nesquehoning, and was currently a member of St. Joseph Parish of Panther Valley.
Babser was a standout athlete for Coaldale High School in the early 1950’s. Before graduating in 1954, he was a tackle and honorable mention All-State football player but also excelled in basketball and track. He was a state champion in the shot put and was a District XI champion for two years in the discus as well as the shot put. He was the first athlete in District XI to surpass the 50-foot mark in the 12-pound shot put class. He also held the distance record in the discus throw for many years. He was inducted into the Carbon County Chapter of the PA Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. Some of his greatest sports memories were playing in the Thanksgiving Day game, Coaldale vs Lansford, and having the honor of being a member of the 11-0 football team.
After high school bob entered Bullis Prep School in Silver Spring MD before attending Coalgate University.
From there he was drafted in the United States Army and was stationed in Herdleberg, Germany with the military police and USA Europe Honor Guard Company. He was a proud yet humble United States Army Veteran.
Upon discharge from the Army, Bob, worked for the Ford Motor Company in NY for a few years, before relocating to Nesquehoning. He was then employed as a section manager of production for Mack Trucks in Allentown and Macungie for over 35 years before becoming a consultant. He was known as the man with the pipeline from the Panther Valley area to Mack Trucks.
Bob was an avid football fan and cheered on Penn State and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also enjoyed listening to polkas on WLSH radio on weekend mornings.
Babser loved the outdoors. He loved spending time with his family and friends at Camp Bald Eagle. He also enjoyed watching any and all the wilderness and outdoor shows.
He was a former member of the Nesquehoning Borough Council.
Robert was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who instilled a legacy of love and hard work in his children. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Surviving are a daughter Lisa Shubeck of Nesquehoning; sons Frank and his wife Wendy and Robert all of Nesquehoning; grandchildren Ashley Nixon and her husband Jeff, Jaden, Frank Jr., and Liam; great grandchildren Madilyn, Oliver, and Bennett; many nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a brother Edward M. “Finky” Shubeck.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, May 19, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. in the Shrine of St. Therese of Lisuxe, 15 E. Garabaldi Ave, Nesquehoning. Interment will be held privately in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Nesquehoning. Call Tuesday morning 9:30-10:45 A.M. in the church. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted in his name to the Carbon County Animal Shelter, 63 Broad St., Nesquehoning, PA 18240 or Carbon County Friends of Animals, 77 W. 13th St., Jim Thorpe, PA 18229.
