Roy E. “Mickey” Angst Jr., 90 of Nesquehoning passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at the Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lehighton.
For many years, Mickey was the voice of “Air Your Opinion” on WLSH, a radio station he managed with his brother Bud Angst. The brothers Angst were early pioneers of talk radio and extended their support for local news through the founding and operation of the “Midweeker” newspaper, a free community newspaper. In addition to his work as a journalist, Mickey was a local activist, dedicated to effective and transparent civic governance around issues that impacted the local community. He served for many years as both a Councilman for Nesquehoning Borough and a Member of the Panther Valley School Board, but even when not in elected office he weighed in with a strong voice (sometimes welcomed and sometimes not) on nearly every major issuing affecting his community.
Throughout his life, Mickey stayed dedicated to youth athletics, serving as a coach and booster across sports, including that of head coach of the Nesquehoning Babe Ruth team for 20 years. He had a passion for fishing and was proud to be part of the successful effort to rejuvenate the Nesquehoning Creek. He was also a longtime member of the Nesquehoning Sokol Citizens Club and the Nesquehoning Republican Club.
Born in Pine Grove, Mickey was one of eighteen children of Roy E. Sr. and Prudence (Hathaway) Angst. He served in the United State Coast Guard during and after WWII, after which he graduated from Penn State University.
He and his wife Helen L. (Bouslough) Angst celebrated their 63rd Wedding Anniversary on December 26th of last year. Surviving along with his wife are his three children: Cynthia Angst of West Chester, PA; Daniel of Nesquehoning; and Michael and his wife Caroline of Paradise Valley, AZ. Mickey also adored his three grandchildren: Madison, Cassidy, and Jordan. The surviving members of his extended family would fill a small auditorium.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 17th at 11AM in the Zion Lutheran Church, 2 E. Catawissa St., Nesquehoning with Pastor Marjorie Keiter officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted in his name to the Zion Lutheran Church. The Joseph S. Blazosky Funeral Home has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
